Flow of Energy
6.L.2.1 - SWBAT summarize how energy derived from the sun is used by plants to produce sugars (photosynthesis) and is transferred within a food chain or food web (terrestrial and aquatic) from producers to consumers to decomposers.
- I will be able to explain how plants produce sugars through the process of photosynthesis.
- I will define producer, consumer, and decomposer.
- I will predict how energy from green plants flows through ecosystems.
- I will design a food chain.
- I will design a food web.
- I will make a model of an energy pyramid.
Personalized Learning Pathway
Option #1 - Understanding Cartoons
The use of cartoons in the classroom can help to engage students so they retain information. Cartoons also provide students with the opportunity to synthesize information, which is a high level thinking skill because it requires you to consume multiple pieces of information and make a connection between them.
Step 1: Study these comics and determine what the artist is trying to say to the public. Discuss your ideas with your tablemates.

Step 3: Select one topic as a team and discuss the questions that accompany the comic. Be prepared to share your talking points with the class.
Step 4: Consume as much information as possible by viewing the instructional videos, looking over the flexbook and note guide and exploring the additional resources. These are located at the bottom of this page.
Step 5: Select an angle and develop an interesting spin on how energy flows in an ecosystem. Consider key vocabulary, concerns and/or potential problems when you are deciding on your topic.
Step 6: Create a comic that mimics the ones that we have used in class.
